How to Win at Life (As a Dumb Person Like Me)

When I was young, I had a messed-up childhood (not even in contact with my parents). I couldn't wait to grow up and be finally free once I reach adulthood. My goal was to change my circumstances in life. Somehow, I realized that for that I needed to change my environment, as your surrounding is everything and determines who you will become. I started hanging out with older, wiser people and listened to their advice on how to be successful, but it really didn't work for me, as it was all just theories from people who didn't have any results in life themselves. Their intentions were good, but the advice was quite terrible, to be honest. Then I tried the typical successful people, but in many cases, their success was the result of rng (luck) or talent, which is equally bad to listen to, and their advice didn't improve me that much.

Filter nr.1
I adjusted my life strategy and started listening to and hanging out only with people who walk the walk and have replicable, non-rng results. I could replicate their success as they grinded it out with minimized role of luck. All I needed to do is copy their day-to-day life and I would have the exact same results as them. This advice about 1:1 copying the best people in the field was actually from Marvin Minsky (the goat of artificial intelligence at MIT). I still remember that interview with him. Anyway, it was such a difference compared to the prior groups. My results improved drastically very quickly.

Filter nr.2
Can be summarized with the quote: "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." This was truly a game-changer. I tried to avoid people who had the results/were the best only because their niche had a weak competition, the one-eyed kings, the best ones in inferior "rooms". I considered living in a bubble like this very fragile long term, which I simply couldn't afford to risk with my life background. Also I was very afraid I would suffer from the Dunning-Kruger effect.

A more robust approach to life is to be the worst one in the best room than the best one in a worse room. And trust me on this one I was the worst one everywhere, but I just had to survive somehow in order to learn from these top cats and if I'm only 10% as good as they are then I will turn out okay in life, which I thought was an achievable goal for dumb and untalented me.

Started applying these filters to my life, tried to be around people who walk the walk and have replicable, non-rng results and are in the hardest rooms.

I went to university and decided on computer science because the faculty of mathematics, physics, and computer science was the place known for having all the smartest kids in my country.

Got interested in fitness. I tried weight lifting, running and many sports. But nothing came even close to martial arts in difficulty. Amongst all the martial arts, 2nd most hardcore [1] is muay thai, so went with that one. I got beaten up badly at first, but I knew this is it, this is where the top cats in the fitness category are at.

I had to grow up. I've never had a father, needed to fill this void of a father figure, so I moved to Thailand because the toughest men I've known were in these muay thai ghetto gyms in Thailand.

In trading the most skilled traders are quants and they once again pass the mandatory filter nr.1, so I went with them. With my filters i was having a 60% chance [2] of making it versus 1% to 5% following the typical feeling trading path.

And so on.

This approach to life was the only one that worked for me so far (and oh boy i tried many) and it will work for you too. There is a high probability you will be significantly better than me as i am dumb.

You've got this.

[1] Lethwei is the most hardcore martial art, it's same as muay thai, but headbutts are allowed. Not as widespread as it's illegal in pretty much all countries except Myanmar. There is always some war going on over there and I'm not that good at dodging grenades.

[2]
in general the success rate is probably higher than 60% but we're talking about my case. :D
